Kathie is a sedimentologist which means she studies river, beach and ocean sediment (gravel, sand, silt and clay). She looks at how the sediment was produced (how they got to be) and their travels through from mountain to ocean. She’s particularly interested in sediment composition, sedimentation and tectonics (faults), and marine geology.
Kathie became a sedimentologist because she loved looking at them under a microscope where she could identify minerals, rocks, volcanic ash and fossils. She’s spent over two years at sea on 14 scientific cruises collecting, describing, and interpreting marine sediments and sedimentary rocks.
Kathie will be sourcing the sediment core in the Hikurangi Channel using microscope techniques to link sand composition to potential river-to-slope and volcanic sources. This will provide important information about local (Napier and East Cape shelf and slope) versus distant (South Island, Cook Strait) earthquake generation of deep-sea sediment flows.
Her work is important for understanding the origin and changes of sediment through the Hikurangi Channel, linking volcanic and earthquake activity to deep-sea deposits.
