GeoNet is the official source of geological hazard information for New Zealand. It quickly identifies all the earthquakes we feel, plus it routinely locates more than 20,000 others each year with real time updates on earthquakes and volcanos at www.geonet.org.nz
GeoNet uses a system to locate and display every earthquake as soon as enough data is received. As soon as one has been detected, the location and magnitude are refined over several minutes as more data arrives. For the bigger quakes, a Geonet Duty Officer confirms the final details.
EQC General Manager Reinsurance, Research and Education Dr Hugh Cowan says the daily data collected by GeoNet gets used around the world to increase understanding of natural hazards and risk management.
"GeoNet's data isn’t just accessible to New Zealanders, it’s a great way to grow public awareness and understanding of natural hazards. It's a rich source of information for scientists, engineers and insurers. Other countries look at GeoNet and the data we can access with envy."
The Earthquake Commission (EQC) has increased its funding of GeoNet, and has been at the heart of GeoNet since it was first established 15 years ago as a collaboration between EQC and GNS Science. EQC funding is assured for at least another five years.
