Hazards of the Hikurangi Subduction Zone

hikurgani trough2

GNS Science has organised a one and half day short course on the 'Hazards of the Hikurangi subduction zone' from 5-6 October 2017 at the LAB, National Aquarium of New Zealand in Napier.

The Hikurangi subduction zone runs along the northeast coast of the South Island and along the East Coast of the North Island. The subduction zone is capable of generating a > M 8.5 earthquake that, in addition to widespread ground shaking, is also likely to produce a tsunami, coastal uplift and subsidence, landslides and liquefaction.

This short course will present up-to-date science knowledge about the Hikurangi subduction zone and the range of natural hazards associated with living on an active plate boundary.

The course is designed for those involved in all aspects of natural hazard management: planners, educators, engineers, local and central government policy makers, insurance managers, emergency managers and business, utility and property owners.

Course registration is $150 and is subsidised by EQC. For further information on this course check out: www.gns.cri.nz/gns/Home/News-and-Events/Events/Hazards-of-the-Hikurangi-Subduction-Zone
