Tsunami Safer Schools

Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced that East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary) has received funding to work with early childhood centres and schools to develop resources to ensure they are prepared and know how to respond to earthquake and tsunami events.

“When there is a natural hazard, children are among the most vulnerable, especially those who are at school when a disaster strikes. We want to provide schools and early childhood education centres with the resources they need to ensure these children remain safe in the event of a disaster,” says Kate Boersen, Community Science Coordinator, East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary).

The project centres on the development of a toolbox for early childhood education centres and schools to facilitate their journey in becoming a tsunami-safer school. The toolbox will be trialled on early childhood education centres and schools in Gisborne, Napier and Wellington.

“It will include a guide on best practice, templates for preparing response procedures, guidelines for communicating with families and other agencies and information sheets for parents and teachers, as well as guidelines to carry out yearly tsunami evacuation walks,” says Kate Boersen.

A team of emergency managers, researchers and scientists, teachers and principals and Ministry staff, will provide expert advice to develop the toolbox to provide a consistent approach for the delivery of tsunami planning.

The one-year project funded by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management includes the Ministry of Education, Tarawhiti Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Manawatu-Wanganui Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Wellington Region Emergency Management Office, GNS Science and Massey University.
